I'll let you know how it goes. I'm hearing Lawrence Krauss may be making an appearance as well tonight. -

I was hoping that the awake had a quote from him. I think I'm going to try and ask him about that and if he knew and what he thinks about it. -

Jehovah's Witnesses and Plastic Surgery?
by John Aquila inin my area, a lot of the young jws, especially girls are getting breast implants, nose jobs, chin implants.
asian jws girls get eyelid surgery, and one girl even got her legs lengthen 5 inches making her about five feet nine inches tall the male jws are getting hair transplants and nose jobs.
and nobody in the congregation says a word, including elders.

It's pretty common in my area. It's kinda a don't ask don't tell policy. A sister may show up one day at the hall looking "enhanced" but nobody is going to go up and ask her anything, they'll just don't what jw's do, gossip behind her back. -

Our hall is asking for money...
by thedepressedsoul ini guess the branch isn't happy with the amount being sent each month since we are way lower than our loan amount.
we now have to another financial survey to see the max amount that can be given.
it is "encouraged" for all to be in attendance and give much forethought and consideration to the amount you can donate each month.

Funny story about my hall and this money stuff. We haven't had a mortgage for 10+ years so after the letter was read slips of paper were handed out. The instructions were to put down how much you can give them hand them into your service overseer. I just threw my anyway, didn't want to mess with it at all. Anyway a month went by and I didn't hear anything about it, come to find out when they tallied up all the slips the amount was greater than any amount they had ever received in a single month. I thought did one or two put down huge amounts, throwing the whole thing off? I asked an elder about it, his take was "nobody wanted to look cheap while handing in their slip." They ended up having to do another survey at the last minute and now I think we're sending in something like $600 a month. -

Switching Halls
by the comet init's time for me and the mrs. to get the hell outta dodge.
recently my hall has undergone major management changes and the atmosphere is..less than ideal.
i'm getting multiple calls a week asking to set up a time to meet, i've politely declined but these guys aren't taking a hint.

Punkofnice-not sure why they keep asking to meet. Just a basis shepherding call I think. We have a new elder that just moved in and thinks he's a rock-star, he's taken a special interest in me it seems.
I've just reached my limit in dealing with all the bs. I honestly never want to step foot in a hall again, the consequences of that are probably greater than what I want however. I've already lost most of my friends because I viewed as weak, my mother won't return my phone calls anymore, and to keep going just to please my wife's family is seeming less and less worth it. Anyway sorry for the rant, thanks everyone for your advice, I appreciate it.

We thought we'd always have to attend once in awhile to keep family happy but at this point we just want to switch halls and fade out completely, if we're in a different hall any consequences will be easier to deal with. switching will be pretty easy, there's 4-6 congregations that we can switch to without having to move. My question is when we switch do we even show up to the new hall ever? Go once or twice? What's the best way to do this? -

Why did the org "forgive" KH mortgages?
by Magnum ini know this has been discussed, but i think it's good that topics like this get brought back up from time to time for the sake of newbies and lurkers, plus, i have a question (related at end of post).. the org brags about "forgiving" kh mortgages as if it's so loving and giving.
i put the word in quotation marks because most of us realize it wasn't forgiving anything.
the new arrangement should actually bring it far more money.. for example, suppose there are twenty congregations total.

I think the whole change was about consistent cash flow. The congregations that didn't have a loan weren't donating a ton of money, and it varied from month to month. It would spike after a part on the service meeting about donating, guilt people into giving, then after awhile people would give less. With the new change you know exactly how much money you're getting every month. Why "forgive" the loans? Because the loans had an end date. The new arrangement doesn't. Its just much easier to plan buying/building stuff when you know what your income is every month. There's no guessing game at corporate HQ, you know what you're getting every month. -

JWs and their views on Sex
by campaign of hate inin the past i have read on this forum that the wt have a say in the "bedroom" of couples.
i thought that was a bit overkill at first, but recently i have come to conclusion that this is true.. the control administered by the wt cooperation on ones sex life is not on only intrusive, its damaging.
they control every aspect of ones thought and action, thus leading most down a path that said corporation wants them to tread.. this path is to get married young, and then eternal loyalty the the organisation.. so how can an organisation force you to get married young?.

this reminded me of a couple things I heard about sex and dating from elders growing up.
1. Since after sex, a man and women were considered unclean, until the next day or something, can't remember the specifics, jehovah doesn't want us having sex that often. This was from a never married elder in his 40's at the time.
2. "Don't date a girl until you're sure you want to marry her." Even at the time it seemed like really really bad advice.

I mean that book looks nice and all....but, I'm pretty sure my Bart Ehrman books on jesus are better. I'll stick with them.
